He was born in Ghent where he studied at the Ghent Academy. In about 1910 he settled at Laethem-S. Martin, where a group of artists, including Servaes , had painted local life and landscapes since c. 1900 , together with his brother Léon and Frits van den Berghe . Inspired by nature and the realities of peasant life his Impressionistic style gradually evolved towards Expressionism, a trend consolidated by contact with German Expressionism during the First World War which he spent, with the others, as an internee in the Netherlands. In 1918 the group returned to Laethem where they were joined by Permeke . He became involved with the Brussels gallery and review Selection, founded in 1920 , exhibiting circus and pastoral subjects, like the Village Fair ( c. 1930 ; Ghent, Mus. voor Schone Kunsten). During his internment he had also met Henri Le Fauconnier and Cubist influence may be seen in some post-war paintings, such as La Loge ( 1928 ; Brussels, Mus. Royaux). His work was highly influential on Belgian painting in the inter-war years.
