NetBSD 5.0



Posle gotovo 2 godine razvoja, izašla je najnovija verzija NetBSD operativnog sistema.

NetBSD 5.0 features greatly improved performance and scalability on modern multiprocessor (SMP) and multi-core systems. Multi-threaded applications can now efficiently make use of more than one CPU or core, and system performance is much better under I/O and network load, benefiting, for example, server, scientific, and software development workloads.

This improved performance is the result of a rewritten threading subsystem based on a 1:1 threading model, new kernel synchronization primitives, kernel preemption, a rewritten scheduler implementation, real-time scheduling extensions, processor sets, and dynamic CPU sets for thread affinity. Almost all core kernel subsystems, like virtual memory, memory allocators, file system frameworks for major file systems, and others were audited and overhauled to make use of highly concurrent algorithms.

Odakle ti ovo "posle 2 godine razvoja"? NetBSD je definitivno imao izdanja i pre toga. (mada mislim da sam i ja to negde video ali sad nemogu da nadjem nigde)

Andrew Doran (NetBSD developer, i covek koga je NetBSD "unajmio" da radi na poboljsanju SMP podrske) je napravio kratki pregled novina koje dolaze sa 5.0 izdanjem, kao i nekoliko benchmark testova koji pokazuju poboljsanje rada na multi-procesorskim platformama: kao HTML ili PDF fajl

Izvini ali ja mora da sam corav, ali jos uvek nemogu da nadjem to. Ili je bila neka greska pa su to ispravili, ili se odnosi na nesto drugo. Mada to sad nije ni vazno. Planiram da napisem nesto za ovo izdanje pa mozda postujem ovde.

Interesantan post na Slahdot-u ciji je naslov "Why NetBSD?". Govori se o koriscenju, prednostima nove verzije, manama i kratkom poredjenju u odnosu na Linux i FreeBSD:

Mislim da je Slashdot krivac. Sada sam pogledao ni ja ne vidim na zvaničnoj stranici.

Jel ovo verzija za 32bitne procesore?

Skinuo sam NetBSD 5.0, sa ovo linka iz mog gornjeg posta, i krenuo da ga instaliram u Virtual Boxu i izbaci mi sledecu gresku:

NetBSD ima problema sa VirtualBox-om, rezultati su razliciti, nekome radi, nekom ne...provereno bi trebalo da radi u VMware i KVM.

Mozes da se igras i da probas da iskljucis ACPI na VB, da bootujes NetBSD bez ACPI-ja, ukljucis hardversku emulaciju (ako je CPU podrzava) i sl.

Ako hoces da probas peticu mozes da skines NetBSD live CD na http://www.jibbed.org/ (izgleda da je najsvezija RC3, jos nema 'cista' petica)

Pokusao sam i sve ostale opcije koje mi nudi boot, ali ni jedna nece da radi.
Nista, pokusacu da skine i isprobam live verziju.

Neznam, mogu jos da ti preporucim da probas stariju 4.0.1 verziju, neki su imali srece sa njom. Ako imas Linux probaj u KVM, ili recimo VMware na Windows-u. Video sam da postoji vmware image za NetBSD 5.0RCnesto negde na sajtu ako neces da se petljas sa instalacijom.

On behalf of NetBSD developers, I'm happy to announce the availability of a public beta of NetBSD 6.0, for your testing pleasure.

This beta is substantially feature-complete; there may be some additional changes to the installer and possibly some additional hardware support if some is found missing and is easily added, but the major changes are done. What we need now is for you, the end users, to test it in your preferred configuration.

Please DO keep in mind, however, that this is a beta release; we fully expect there are some lurking bugs, so use with caution.

time_t is now 64 bits.
syslog improvements: Reliable TCP connections, encryption, syslog protocol API.
LKMs removed; superseded by the new module(7) framework.
Boot loaders on some arches (i386, amd64) support loading modules at boot.
Added crash( a new utility based on ddb(4) to diagnose kernel crashes.
Added netpgp(1), a BSD-licensed implementation of PGP.
Added LVM (Logical Volume Manager) functionality.
Multiprocessor support for Xen PV DomUs.
Xen2 support has been dropped.
Better Xen PV support on Linux dom0, including Citrix XenServer.
Much improved copmpat_linux support for running Linux binaries.
x.org was updated with new versions of most utilities, and the X server.
Some arches now default to UFS2 in sysinst.
FFS: softdep is no longer available, use WAPBL logging instead.
gpio(4) has been completely reworked to integrate with kauth(9)
evbarm now have support for Gumstix Verdex and Verdex Pro, Marvell Sheevaplug and other Marvell SoC NAS boxes, i.MX51 SoC.
arm platforms has support for Cortex-A8 CPUs.
pfsync(4) from OpenBSD 4.2
mDNSResponder is now in base.
raid(4) now has parity maps, greatly improving parity rewrite times after unclean shutdown.

...and LOTS more hardware support added to existing drivers! Please help us out by testing these changes and reporting problems either to an appropriate mailing list, via send-pr, or via the web form.

Please remember that this is a BETA release. Don't use it anywhere where the quirks of a beta might cause problems from which it would be hard to recover!

Konacno je izasla nova verzija NetBSD sistema, evo dela citata sa bloga o tome sta je novo u ovom izdanju:

Changes from the previous release include scalability improvements on multi-core systems, many new and updated device drivers, Xen and MIPS port improvements, and brand new features such as a new packet filter.

Some NetBSD 6.0 highlights are: support for thread-local storage (TLS), Logical Volume Manager (LVM) functionality, rewritten disk quota subsystem, new subsystems to handle flash devices and NAND controllers, an experimental CHFS file system designed for flash devices, support for Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) protocol, and more. This release also introduces NPF - a new packet filter, designed with multi-core systems in mind, which can do TCP/IP traffic filtering, stateful inspection, and network address translation (NAT).

In addition to many other features, NetBSD 6.0 includes significant developments in various ports. Some highlights:

SMP support for Xen domU kernels, initial suspend/resume support for Xen domU, PCI pass-through support for Xen3, and addition of the balloon driver.
Major rework of MIPS port adding support for SMP and 64-bit (O32, N32, N64 ABIs are supported) processors, DSP v2 ASE extension, various NetLogic/RMI processor models, Loongson family processors, and new SoC boards.

ARM has gained support for Cortex-A8 processors, various new SoCs, and initial support for Raspberry Pi. Full support for Raspberry Pi and major ARM improvements to come in a future NetBSD release.
time_t is now a 64-bit quantity on all NetBSD ports. This means that the NetBSD world no longer ends in 2037.
