AGES OLD REEFS FOUND
Scientists have discovered 100,000-year-old coral reefs stretching for more than 60 miles off the Australian north coast.
The reefs have avoided human detection for so long as, laying 66ft under water, they were invisible to satellite photographs.
Geoscience Australia said the find "undoubtedly" signified more reefs waiting to be found.
The formations were spotted by a team that went to the Gulf of Carpentaria to follow up work two years ago that found patch reefs around six miles long.
Voyage leader Peter Harris said: "The exciting part of all this is that it really highlights how little we know about the continental shelf around Australia.
