Pismo koje sam dobio od Gamespota
You've almost certainly heard by now that id Software's upcoming first-person shooter, Doom 3, is finished. The long mantra of "when it's done" has been replaced by an actual ship date: August 3. So now, of course, the questions shift from "when" to "what, where, why, how, and who".
What: Doom 3 is first-person shooter, but it's taking a different approach than most of id's recent work. Quake III Arena put the focus on extreme multiplayer action. Doom 3's main focus is its single-player campaign, which is said to put the focus on slower-paced horror-themed thrills--the game's engine is built to deliver realistic shadows, making way, of course, for evil things to jump out of those shadows.
Where: Phobos, one of the moons that orbits the planet Mars. Since there are a fair amount of demons involved and the game is said to be a sort of retelling of the first Doom's story, you can probably expect to see a little Hell in there, too.
Why: Well, this one seems pretty obvious. Doom is one of the greatest games of all time. It had a tremendous impact on the PC market at the time. Doom II quickly followed--some would say it followed a little too quickly. After that, id went 3D with Quake. Isn't it about time we returned to Phobos and caught up with our intrepid space marine?
How: With its all-new engine, that's how. Doom 3's all the bells and whistles that you'd expect from a modern first-person shooter, from its realistic shadow-casting to rag-doll physics. You'll also be able to play the game competitively online. Though id wasn't the first to use the term "deathmatch," (The NeoGeo fighter, World Heroes came before it, to name one) id's the company that made the mode famous. Single-player is still the focus, but expect to see some sort of multiplayer here, as well.
Who: Who's excited to play Doom 3? Just about everyone around here. It's been difficult to tell how the final product will turn out in the brief moments we've spent with the game over the years. Who knows how the final product will turn out? Well, in a couple of short weeks, we'll find out. It's been a little hard to get excited about all these "when it's done" shooters, like Doom 3 and Half-Life 2, with great shooters like Far Cry coming along to fill the void. But with the release date in sight, it's hard not to get a at least a little excited about the final product's imminent debut.
