Citat:For the first time in its 217-year history France's celebrated Louvre museum is asking art lovers to dig deep into their pockets to raise €1m (£846,000) to buy a 16th-century masterpiece.
Les Trois Grâces may be barely bigger than a piece of A4 paper but it is perfectly formed, according to art experts who describe the painting as a "national treasure" that needs to be saved.
The world's most visited art museum has raised €3m but went public with its appeal after falling short of the €4m price tag demanded by the painting's private owner.

Citat:Museums exist at the pleasure of the public, even one as old and revered as the Louvre. Patrons coming through the door keep the institution alive, both financially and metaphorically. Without the oxygen of public interest, museums suffocate in the stuffy air of their own irrelevance. The Louvre risks a major public relations disaster with this campaign. As much as it pains me that such a beautiful and significant work languishes unseen, it pains me even more that the Louvre seems so tone deaf to the cries of the French public right now. In a land that once boiled over after the (probably apocryphal) phrase “Let them eat cake!”, the Louvre seems to suggest, “Let them feast on Cranach!”

Jeeej! Čast Francuske je spašena! Luvr je prikupio milion evra i još malo preko toga.
Citat:The Louvre announced Friday that it had raised $1.3 million from thousands of online donors to buy a luminous Renaissance painting of three nude women that has never been displayed in public.
(...)
Louvre officials made an appeal in a Web campaign beginning Nov. 13. They beat their deadline of Jan. 31 as more than 5,000 donors responded, mostly from France, but also from Belgium, Spain and the United States.
“We didn’t think this could happen so rapidly,” said Henri Loyrette, the Louvre’s director.
Contributors, through a Web site, made donations from a single euro to 40,000 euros ($52,700), with the average about 150 euros ($195). A number of French companies and foundations also gave. Many donors wrote notes to the Louvre, Mr. Loyrette said, expressing appreciation and offering money to honor loved ones.
The painting is to be displayed in a dedicated room at the museum from March 2 to April 4.
