If you thought the J200 was a little basic, then the T290 will be a bit of a shock. Aimed pretty much at the bargain basement end of the market, the T290 comes with a small 101x80 pixel display in 4096 colours, dual-band GSM, GPRS, WAP 1.2 and just two embedded games. There's a speakerphone, which the J200 lacks, but no infra-red, Java and certainly no camera. However, the phone only weighs 72.9 grams, making it even lighter than the J200 and although it's not as attractive as the other handset, it still looks fairly presentable.
However, although the J200 is competitive with other entry-level handsets, the T290 really isn't. The small 101x80 pixel screen seems to be a relic from the past, and even though it features GPRS and WAP, which some other low-end handsets don't, the small screen will make web browsing difficult. On the other hand, the maximum talktime is a truly impressive 12 hours, with up to 12 days standby, so really the T290 is a mixed bag.
The T290 will be available from early 2005 in various dual-band configurations, the T290i and T290c being 900/1800 GSM models, and the T290a 850/1900.
