Dear Justin,
It's always great to find other web designers and developers who use PHP. In our opinion PHP stands head and shoulders above ASP, JSP and even ColdFusion for its power, speed, ease of use, portability, and efficient resource use. Two years ago we began an in-house project to build a custom tags engine for PHP. Now called PHPtags, we have been using this system for over a year on all new projects. PHPtags has a number of open source products built into it as plugins, most notably ADOdb (a database library) and Smarty (a templating system). Recently we have begun construction of a content management system using these custom tags. The PHPtags CMS is basically a login controlled area where content is created for various website features and tools, such as our photo and story servers, with the content being deployed very easily on pages using custom tags. Initially it will be based on many of the admin and control panel features that we have built for clients. At the start of the so-called 'war' in Iraq we were alarmed by the propaganda and suppression of real news that took place, and so we made a commitment to package up our story server as a free product that anyone could use to get the truth out. This is still our plan, and the first version of the PHPtags Content Management System will be primarily our Freevoice story server and Photopicker photo server. Now let me get to the point of writing to you. Before releasing our story server, we are planning to release the CMS framework alone as a page authentication tool, which will make possible easy deployment of our Membercheck authentication tagset. We have used Membercheck on numerous sites for over a year, so it is solid and moderately well tested on Linux and Windows. However, we need beta testers for more extensive testing. We are inviting all web designers and developers who use PHP to be beta testers. In exchange, you will have free access to a powerful new open source tool that is already reliable enough to use in production. We will even install PHPtags for you, on the website of your choice, or you can do it yourself. We will work with you on a personal level to install PHPtags or help you install it, and address any problems you may encounter. You can use the PHPtags authentication framework with almost any database, or you can use its built-in SQLite database. Currently tested are MySQL and Microsoft Access, and we plan to work with our beta testers to test other databases. Our core tagset will be included with the CMS framework, including tags for form building and validation, database queries, templates, page editing, popups, menus, and email address cloaking. With the PHPtags page editor anyone in authorized user groups, when logged in, can edit page content by simply browsing to the page, clicking a link, and using our word-processor style editor. Our email address cloaking tool uses 128-bit RSA encryption and allows humans but not robots to see email addresses. Why are we doing this? (1) We support the philosophy of open source products and want to do something about the corporate world's stonewalling of PHP, because PHP really is much better than what they are using. (2) We don't support the 'war' and want to do something that makes a difference. (3) We want to get to know other PHP web designers and developers, out of a sense of community and also because we want you to know about us and our work. (4) We are hoping that among our beta testers there will be a few interested developers who may want to get involved in development of the PHPtags CMS or in building tagsets. So what do you say? Free installations will be done on a first-come first-served basis, hopefully beginning some time in September. When requesting your copy of PHPtags and/or installation, please give us some details of the context of usage. And of course we'll be happy to answer your questions by email. Maybe it will give us an incentive to finish the documentation If you wish to receive the occasional email about the status of the PHPtags project, just send us a note to that effect. This offer is limited to commercial web designers and developers.
Sincerely,
--D'Suza Kelly
