Blow for AMD, but no conspiracy...
By INQUIRER staff: Wednesday 28 July 2004, 10:20
A REPORT on news.com said that Microsoft has delayed its version of 64-bit Windows for AMD64 and for Intel's EM64T.
That will hurt AMD more than Intel if the reports turn out to be correct - the chip giant has said it won't release desktop chips using 64-32 extensions until Windows XP64 ships.
Sources within AMD tell the INQUIRER that delays in the release of Win64XP are, as we reported yesterday, nothing to do with a vast Intel-Microsoft conspiracy.
Instead, Microsoft is struggling to get XP service pack two out of the door, and has deployed a number of its programming staff to whip up that concoction just as soon as possible.
Beware speed bumpsIt would have a severely embarrassing SNAFU on its hands if it failed to deliver the security elements it has promised for SP2.
But SP2 is delayed as well - the most recent ETA for the patch is now August, but like every Microsoft software release, this is a moveable feast. However fast AMD sponsored cyclists like Lance A and F1 Ferrari cars go, the chip contender can't move faster than the speed of Microsoft. And then there's Longhorn, the snail like OS that was supposed to be in beta by now.
