U budućnosti čovečanstvo je podeljno na grupe u zavisnosti od osobina ličnosti koju ispoljavalju.
Medjutim ima i onih koji zbog svoje različitosti ne spadaju ni u jednu grupu.
Tris Prior saznaje da zbog svojih osobina ličnosti nikada neće moći da pripada nijednoj od grupa kao i to da postoji zavera da se ubiju svi oni koji ne pripadaju nijednoj od grupa jer predstavalju opasnost za društvo.
