BHUBANESWAR, Aug. 25. — Spectre of drought looms large over a some parts of the state, especially those in the southern and western region, even as the coastal belt received heavy rainfall and experienced flood during the recent weeks. The average cumulative rainfall deficiency of the state over the period was 4.6 percent.
As per the information available from the revenue and agriculture departments, two districts (Malkangiri and Nuapara) have recorded 30 to 50 per cent deficient rainfall during the period from 1 June to 24 August, while five districts experienced deviation of 20 to 30 per cent and another 13 districts 20 per cent or below during the same period.
Perennially drought-prone Nuapara district has received 40.6 per cent less than the normal rainfall, while another southern district Malkangiri recorded a deviation of 38.2 percent during the last three months.
Five other districts ( Deogarh, Gajapati, Ganjam, Koraput and Rayagada) received 20 to 30 per cent deficient rainfall. All of these districts except Deogarh belonged to southern region. Rayagada recorded a deviation of 26.7 per cent, Deogarh 25.4 per cent, Gajapati 25.3 per cent, Koraput 23 per cent and Ganjam 21.4 per cent deficiency.
Besides, 13 more districts received scanty rainfall ( with a deviation of 20 per cent or below) during the last three monsoon months. Names of these districts are: Bargarh, Bolangir, Boudh, Jagatsinghpur, Kalahandi, Kondhmal, Kendrapara, Khurda, Mayurbhanj, Nowrangpur, Puri, Sonepur and Sundargarh.
On the contrary, 10 districts recorded rainfall more than the normal during the above period. Angul district received the highest excess amount of rainfall (34.8 percent), followed by neighbouring Dhenkanal (26.4 per cent), Cuttack (24.2 per cent), Nayagarh ( 22.7 per cent), and Sambalpur (20.1 per cent).
The state received a cumulative rainfall of 23,800 mm rainfall from June till yesterday. The state average was 793.3 mm as against the normal rainfall of 832 mm. (183.5 mm in June, 182.6 mm in July and 182.6 mm this month).
When contacted, revenue minister, Mr Manmohan Samal said the state government was closely monitoring the situation. Appropriate contingency measures were being taken to save the crop and assist the affected farmers.
