Porteus ima novi sistem za izbor modula gde se direktno na web strani mogu izabrati različiti parametri sistema, izabrati desktop okruženje, dodati vlasnički drajveri za grafičke kartice, dodati omiljeni browser, Skype ili LibreOffice, podesiti vremensku zonu i raspored tastature, itd. Dostupna desktop okruženja su KDE, Xfce, Mate i LxQt. Takođe je dostupna i verzije bez desktop okruženja.
Kada izaberete module koje želite biće kreirana ISO slika sa odgovarajućim modulima. Ovo je slično web aplikaciji koja je nekad postojala na Slax sajtu.
Trenutno aktuelna verzija Porteusa je 3.1 (decembar 2014).
Probao sam KDE verziju. KDE je u verziji 4. Izbor programa za multimediju i internet je sjajan (interesantno, uključen je i program domaćeg autora Great Little Radio Player). Uključen je i program za pregled dokumentata (Okular), ali ako vam je potrebna mogućnost uređivanja moraćete da u "čarobnjaku" izaberete ili LibreOffice ili Abiword. Još jedan izbor koji ćete morati da uradite je i izbor browsera. Ako ga ne izaberete, snimljena iso slika će doći bez browsera.
Porteus ima nekoliko alata za podešavanje sistema, uključujući i program za čuvanje promena, program za instalaciju na USB ili HDD i grafički menadžer paketa. Grafički menadžer paketa je u mogućnosti da pretražuje nekoliko popularnih repozitorijuma paketa za Slackware (Slackware, Salix, AlienBob, Slacky, itd), a takođe postoji mogućnost instalacije dodatnih Porteus modula ili konverzije Slackware paketa u Porteus module.
